Kang To said this: "Thank you for capturing me. That way I wouldn't need to kill you."
Those words echoed in my mind for a long time, but they barely stayed three seconds in Shun Ji's. For a moment he looked remorseful and for one second there was a hint of humanity in his eyes. But yet it was still extinguished the moment he recalls how Kang To mercilessly murdered his brother for revenge's sake. Eventhough Shun Ji was the brother of Kang To's mother's murderer, Kang To still regarded him as a friend, his only friend. But Shun Ji on the other hand, he was befuddled by vengeance, and he still swore revenge on Kang To and would do anything to kill him. But I always thought that Kang To would still remain as a link to Shun Ji's humanity, but now, I can see that Shun Ji is beyond redemption. Shun Ji was actually capable of watching his only best friend get brutally tortured by his father in a cage full of nails, and he was actually enjoying the moment when Kang To was getting whipped countless times.
It seems that whatever memories Kang To and Shun Ji shared together as two best friends are now thrown into an abyss.
Their friendship has been completely destroyed, but at least Kang To kept the remaining shards of their friendship, and eventhough those shards are cutting and scarring his skin, he still held onto them whereas Shun Ji now views Kang To as an arch enemy, and he had vowed to tear him down.
The next two episodes will be aired next week. And we will see how things are going to wrap up in the upcoming finale.
R.I.P Shun Ji. You remained a loyal brother and son, but not a loyal friend.
You are dying, Shun Ji.
Not as a human.
But as a monster.

The end of episode 26: Kang To's attempt to kill Shun Ji's cruel father.
- I wonder if she’ll be better off if I leave her.
-What do you think is the one thing in a grown man’s life so precious that he must protect it with his life? I believe it’s love. I love Joseon, I love my hometown, I love my mother, my wife, my son. Watching those that I love be violated by the Japanese, how could I not feel rage? If you truly love Mok Dan, you put your life on the line to stay by her side and protect her, and fight the ones who would torment her.
-Kang To and Yang Baek
To be honest, I died a little inside watching this scene. Watching the way realization dawned on her face, seeing her eyebrows in such a heartbreaking angle, and how hot tears splashed down her cheeks, it was all very very gut wrenching. Mok Dan's father was all she ever had as a family, and now she lost him too. Kang To lost his family a while back, and this scene just proves how much they are in need of each other. If Kang To meets a tragic end, it's only merciful that Mok Dan dies with him, or else I don't think she can cope with her life afterwards.
Finale next week will decide both of their fates.
I actually found this scene scary, not sweet at all. The way they locked eyes on each other, you can see the fear in both of their eyes, fear that they might not see each other again. Mok Dan was particularly reluctant in this scene, as you can see. She lost her father, and now she fears that she might lose her young master.
To me, the above situation must be really hard for Rara. He was right in front of her, Bridal Mask, the masked vigilante. One bullet and he falls to the ground like a rag doll. But the trigger wasn't pulled. Because I'm sure that during that moment, she walked down memory lane, and went back five years. After what Kang To had done for her, she couldn't do it. She really loved him that much, to the extent where she was willing to face the aftermath of the situation if she decided not to capture or kill him. President Ueno warned her about it already once, telling her if she doesn't obey his words, she will have to put her neck out. (Meaning she will have to die.) But for Kang To, she was willing to take all of it.
That is what I admire about this beautiful character.
Now this is an unforgettable scene shared between these two compelling characters. Shun Ji and Rara.
Rara describes her understanding of Mok Dan's rejection of her offer to let Mok Dan and Kang To flee the country. She says how Mok Dan loved everything that entails Kang To being Gaksital. She says how Mok Dan loved Kang To as well as Gaksital, but as for her, she only loved the Imperial Officer Lee Kang To, the one that was burning with ambition for the Japanese Empire.
Shun Ji, on the other hand, is beginning to think things through. He began confessing to Rara, questioning his actions, questioning his ability to capture Yang Baek, Dong Jin and Bridal Mask/Gaksital. What if he fails? What will happen to him in the end? Those were his questions.
Tears began to well up in his eyes as he questions whether his life is being wasted away.
I must admit this scene made me feel sorry for Shun Ji. He was becoming the person he did not want to become.
But it was all for revenge.
But it was all for revenge.
With two more episodes left, I sincerely hope he and everyone makes it to the end. Alive. Grasping that iron flute of his.
